The Kickstarter campaign is underway!
What on earth does that mean?
Kickstarter, for those of you who might not be familiar with it, is a crowdfunding platform, mostly for artists and entrepreneurs. You design a project, figure out how much it’s going to cost, and offer people incentives to support it. It’s all-or-nothing funding, which means that if your goal isn’t met, the project won’t be funded. But there’s no ceiling – you can raise as much money as people are willing to pledge.
I’d initially resisted the idea of crowdfunding this first music album. From my perspective – and many of you all know this truth quite personally – the Barretts have received their fair share of support and then some. We have been carried by communities of family and friends and church through the emotional and financial storms of Chris’s cancer, and it just didn’t make sense to me to ask for a different kind of support.
But then some different people talked me into it. They said things like this:
“Please let us be part of what you’re doing.”
“It would be a gift to me if you’d let me support you.”
“If you don’t set up a Kickstarter campaign, I’m going to be MAD.” ☺
What I hope goes without saying is this: I do not have any sense of entitlement about this – you dear, dear people don’t owe us a thing. Please, there is no pressure to come on board financially. None at all.
If you find yourself wanting to participate, though, head over to the project page to learn about support levels and to see more information about the music and the album. And if you are planning to buy a CD when they come out, it would indeed help me for you to “pre-order” in this way. You’ll help support the recording process, you’ll get regular updates on how the project is coming, you’ll get some fun insider glimpses into the studio, and you’ll get the music delivered right to you as soon as it’s available.
The other incredibly helpful way for you to support the project would be for you to share the link with friends and family members you think might be interested. I’ve supported two Kickstarter campaigns in the last year, and neither of them were projects by people I know personally. Instead, they were projects introduced to me with passion and joy by people I trust. So if you know of anyone who might be interested, it would be a great honor and help if you would pass the info on to them.
I’m VERY excited about this whole endeavor! I’m excited about the music I’ve already written and the music I’m writing at the last minute, excited to work with my producer Gabe, excited to get in the studio, excited to work with some other amazing musicians to see how these songs come to life in a whole new way. And I’m very, very excited to share it with you…soon!
