I am so, SO thrilled to be writing this from Perfect Mix Studios. It’s been an amazing week so far. Days 1 and 2 were devoted to laying guide tracks for vocals and keys, and we also narrowed my songlist down to 14 songs. We’ve spent some time doing production planning for those songs, and yesterday we started digging in to each one. Gabe is doing some drum tracking and laying bass and rhythm guitar tracks (among other things…he’s a little bit ridiculous) and I’m working on creating lead sheets and adding a little bit of sonic fun here and there (HARPSICHORD, baby. Also Wurley.).
I think a lot about the 170 people who gave money to the Kickstarter campaign. I think a lot about my parents, who are spending this week playing with and feeding and caring for our children to make it possible for me to be here. I think a lot about Chris, about his family who cared for him while I was gone during this last medical excitement. I think about our churches present and past, and about my valiant writer’s group, and the friends who have surrounded me with creative ideas and concrete support. My embeddedness in this outspread network of love and care is what is making it possible for me to do work I love this week. I am so grateful.
As these songs become more complex and more familiar, I find myself hoping some of the same things I’ve hoped as I’ve worked on sermons or articles. I hope they connect with people. I hope the Spirit will breathe through them to whisper hope or understanding or peace to someone. I hope that the sharper edges will open up for someone a way into his or her own pain. I hope they’re useful tools in the vast and diverse workshop of grace.
Enough thoughts. Back to work!
Sending love across the networks to my holy network,
